St. Mary’s Parish

It is from here that Catholicism spread in the early 1840s within the Wellington Archdiocese, which at that time included what is now the diocese of Palmerston North. Pukekaraka is blessed to have the oldest, still in use Catholic church in New Zealand. This building serves as a weekday Mass centre, is often requested for baptisms, weddings and funerals and is recognised as a special place for prayer.

In 2014, the parish was amalgamated with St Joseph’s Levin, but, in order to acknowledge the mana of Ngati Kapu and their place in the history of the Archdiocese, Cardinal Dew on 28th February, 2021, promulgated St Mary’s as a separate entity once again. The Covenant made with Ngati Kapu when they permitted the Church to use their land for the Mission, was renewed in December, 2020. This Kawenata (Covenant) recognises Ngati Kapu as Kaitiaki of the Mission who offer and welcome non-Maori to work with them.

Vision

Our parish is a community of communities – in our diversity we find unity and strength as members of the Body of Christ. We belong, grow and connect; working together for the good of the whole body.

Our leadership is collaborative and transparent, encouraging active dialogue and applying the principle of subsidiarity (those things that can be decided at the lowest possible level are decided at that level).

The identity of Eucharistic Communities within the Parish is respected and all voices are valued and listened to.

St. Mary of the Angels

St Mary of the Angels, a diverse community, seeks to praise and thank God in a place of calm and beauty and strives to be Christ alive in Central Wellington.

The congregation is diverse in its ethnic make up. Slightly more than half of those present are NZ European. There are significant Filipino, Korean, and Chinese communities; there is a small part of the congregation who identify as NZ Maori; 14% of the congregation represents a diverse range of other smaller ethnic groups.

St Mary of the Angels is a ‘Parish Church’ for some. For many it is a devotional centre at the heart of the city. This blend of territorial parish and devotional centre helps give St Mary’s a unique character. When you add the atmosphere generated by the majesty and beauty of the environment it is easy to sense why so many want to call it ‘home’.

Parish of the Holy Spirit, Te Wairua Tapu

As we all journey together, it is good to reflect on what God wants us to do for our Parish communities. God is reaching out to us in mercy, love and compassion. I am delighted with the involvement and participation of all the stewards of the parish. Stewardship Spirituality is a way of life that calls for our response by receiving the gifts of God with gratitude, cultivating our responsibility and sharing them generously in justice with others and returning the gifts with increase to God. St Paul’s letter to the Corinthians reads “There are varieties of gifts but the same spirit, and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each given the manifestation of the spirit for the common good.” (1 Cor. 12:4-7).

We are all good stewards of God’s gifts. We are all working for the common good of the mission of Christ. Our parish aims to become communities who welcome all. So everyone feels a sense of belonging, like a family. I personally encourage you all to support each other, to welcome the new faces to our communities. We should reflect every day about our parish. What gifts and abilities has God given to me and you? How do I use them for God and for the Parish of the Holy Spirit? What St Augustine of Hippo once said: “what you are is a gift from God and what you become is your gift to God”. Our parish is blessed with multicultural faces, languages and gifts. Let us give them to God, living out our baptismal mission in the world. I hope this website will help you to get to know the parish and show you opportunities to share your time, talents and treasures for the common good of the Parish of the Holy Spirit, Te Wairua Tapu.
